“Bosco Sevana”, was founded in 1996 and is one of the first institutions of Don Bosco Mission in Sri Lanka. The institution was initially functioning as a rehabilitation center for the sexually abused boys as the area was well known for child sex tourism. With Don Bosco’s proactive intervention, the issue has sufficiently subsided. To prevent child abuse “Bosco Sevana” opened its doors also to the children who are at risk of falling victim to abuse and drug addiction, lack of parental guidance and environmental risks. Over the past 30 years the institution has been a home to more than a thousand children.
The center offers accommodation, food, shelter, education, and counseling to help the children come out of any barriers that poses threats for their growth into responsible adulthood. Significant and prevalent issues in the region include sex tourism, drug addiction, early marriage and a high proportion of school dropouts. Children mostly live an unsupervised life as both parents’ fights with the sea to put food on the table. Consequently, most kids in the neighborhood become vulnerable without right support and care.
