Even though more than ten years have passed since the civil war ended in 2009, the Northern Province still remains underdeveloped. Many rural and remote villages were cut off from the outside world for nearly 30 years because of the war. In these areas, women are still stuck in traditional roles, mostly limited to household work. Many parents in these communities are uneducated and unaware of the value of education. As a result, they often don’t send their children—especially girls—to school. Due to poverty and lack of opportunities, people remain trapped in a cycle of hardship.

Young people who want to change their lives and build a better future often don’t get support or guidance from their families, mostly because of their poor financial background. To help with this, Don Bosco Development Centre offers full scholarships for young girls. These include vocational training, accommodation, food, counseling, competitions, activities, and group programs. So far, the Girls’ Hostel has supported 211 girls from poor families.

This support has given many girls, who were once limited to their homes, a chance to dream big and work toward a better life for themselves and their families.
