The schools in Kilinochchi District and elsewhere in the Northern Province had been badly damaged during ethnic conflict and many of the school buildings were not safe for use. Damage to schools was one of the most devastating effects of the civil war.
Prolonged leaves and unsafe surrounding with the fear of death have left an indelible effect on the minds of the people of the area and have an uneducated elderly generation without sufficient knowledge of the importance of education.
To be assured of a secure and proper future for the children of the war-affected Kilinochchi District the construction of an English medium primary school was started. This is the first step of a very long journey. The Project is intended to have a long-term impact on the lives of the disadvantaged population and to create an environment in which the younger generation will have equal rights and opportunities to come up in their lives fighting the traumatic experiences of the past.
