In the coastal community of Dungalpitiya, the majority of the elderly population depends on the sea for their livelihood. Although there are five government schools in the area, none of them have proper infrastructure or sufficient staff. Since only the children of the poorer families attend those schools, the voicelessness and ignorance of parents have kept these schools in this manner for years. Hence, Don Bosco provides free after school classes, career guidance sessions and leadership and soft skills development programs. Empowering children through education and life skills development is not sufficient unless until the family background too is conducive to support and nurture motivation. Thus, this project targets awareness building, strengthening of parents’ involvement, empowerment of women and senior citizens through self-employment and peer involvement, promotion of child rights, and community engagement.
