As part of its commitment to supporting communities affected by natural disasters, Don Bosco Development Centre launched a recovery initiative to restore paddy cultivation and support the livelihoods of the Neelabemma farming community affected by Cyclone Ditwah.Through this initiative, Don Bosco distributed 750,000 kg (750 MT) of organic fertilizer, This effort has now resulted in a remarkable achievement. An inauguration ceremony marking the harvest of the restored paddy fields was recently held, celebrating the resilience and determination of the farming community.
According to Paddy Harvest Survey, we are proud to share that the restored fields achieved an impressive yield of 8 MT per hectare, exceeding both the national average and the project’s expected target of 5 MT per hectare. Our heartfelt gratitude goes to all Salesian Donors who supported the relief and recovery efforts, as well as to Deutsche Bank and Knorr-Bremse Global Care Asia Pacific Limited (“Global Care”) for their valuable contributions.
We also extend our sincere appreciation to the government officials of the Karuwalagaswewa Divisional Secretariat, the National Fertilizer Department, and the Puttalam Agriculture Department for their dedicated support and collaboration throughout this initiative.
