The present economic crisis in Sri Lanka has pushed many households into utter poverty. A lot of families have reduced their consumption of food and are suffering in many ways without being able to afford essential goods and services. The poor does not have the capital required to find other avenues of income. Don Bosco Development Centre (DBDC) In this regard, initiated a mushroom cultivation programme in order to help the poor to gain an extra income to fight against vulnerability. This is carried out as the first step of a greater project which will create income generation avenues to nearly 50 house wives of low-income families. As the initial stage two women were trained and recruited and currently, there are four employees. The programme aims at empowering women to contribute to the family income so that the financial difficulties will not jeopardize the education of the children as many children drops out of schools as a result of the crisis.
